Lanta 5: Eyes of Bitana
The War on Continent Poril
What happened in the freezing continent of Poril during the Dark Surge is mostly a mystery. Drow were seen existing the underdark through caves at the base of the Toham Ridge. Once out, they split up into several groups, including one heading north to the Toham plains where very few humans reside. The rest separated into one half going south to the collection of smaller towns and the others went east to the capital of Asorm. The group of hunters who saw the surge began running back to their hometown, but it was no use. The drow had spotted them and they easily outran the humans. As the drow came down on them, the men made one last effort to warn their home. They quickly wrote warnings on paper, hides, and whatever else they had and attached them to their arrows. They were able to fire off a dozen warning messages before the drow swarmed them.
The arrows landed on two neighboring farms, one owned by the infamous Devain (deh-vane) family and the other owned by the rich Quinell family. The two had a feud stretching back 10 years that started with the Quinells using more than their fair share of resources. They would often go into the neighboring towns and buy up all the fire wood and feed and take more water than they needed. This led to a public embarrassment for them when the entire Devain family ran into them in the town of Rayab. The family accused them of stealing and the Quinells fled, forever being socially spat upon by those who witnessed. For the next decade, any Devain that saw a Quinell made a scene. When the arrows from the terrified hunters hit the farms that day, both families snapped. Neither responded rationally and war broke out the next morning. The Quinells had enough weaponry to arm themselves and workers, but the Devains headed to Rayab and the larger city of Wayoa to try gathering people to rise up against their snooty neighbors.
When the families met in Rayab, violence broke out. It turned out that the high class who had come to Rayab to get away from their worries had had enough of the squabbling and took the Quinell’s side. It was the poor versus the rich in a bloody mayhem. All of this bickering took place as the drow smashed through the family’s farmhouses, neither one occupied. When they reached Rayab, the townsfolk folk reacted by hiding. Two sides of the town had created two “headquarters” and from these places the town fought the drow. There are more than two stories about what happened: some say the Quinells fought both Devain and the drow and vice versa, some said the drow died from the freezing cold while the two fought, and some say the neighboring towns eventually came and saved them both. What is known is that the other nearby cites had had a sophisticated form of delivering messages which allowed them to report about where the drow were headed. It was also common for families to train their boys how to survive and fight in the wild should they ever get lost in the frightful cold. The drow had walked into a very bestial world of ice for which they were not prepared for, but their savagery was just the answer.
